Jurassic World Rebirth Introduces a Sinister Island Full of Secrets
The final trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth has arrived courtesy of Universal Pictures. It’s the last glimpse at the prehistoric franchise before it blasts into theaters for the Fourth of July weekend, and it looks every bit as wild as it did back when it first hit cinemas in 1993. The film, which was released in March, is set to hit theaters on July 2, 2025.
This fourth entry in the Jurassic World franchise and seventh in the larger franchise is set to reboot the series. It stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, returns to the original site of Jurassic Park, and is about teaming up to stop a scientific miracle drug on an island where some of the largest and most dangerous dinosaurs in the franchise roam freely.
Jurassic World Rebirth was directed by Gareth Edwards, who previously directed Godzilla in 2014. The script was written by David Koepp, who wrote Jurassic Park, its sequel, The Lost World, and cameos in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022). The story will follow five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, when the rapidly changing global ecosystem has left dinosaurs on the brink of extinction. The remaining dinosaurs are now limited to small, isolated biospheres that try to recreate their ancient environments in the equatorial region of the planet. One of these tropical biospheres is home to the largest dinosaur in the land, sea, and air, all of which have in their DNA a “miracle genetic component” that’s key to a cure-all drug that has the potential to save the lives of millions of people.
Scarlett Johansson plays Zora Bennett, who is sent to lead a team on a secret government mission to recover the drug and retrieve those critical genetic components. A small civilian boating family happens to get caught in a dinosaur attack on the waterway the team is operating on, and in the aftermath, they all wash up on a deserted island. It also happens to be an abandoned research island that was part of the original Jurassic Park project before the original island was shut down. The trailer teases that there’s more than just dinosaurs on the island.
Jurassic World Rebirth Cast Brings New Faces and Familiar Dangers
Jurassic World Rebirth stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, as well as Rupert Friend, Jonathan Bailey, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacano, Bechir Sylvain, Ed Skrein, and Philippine Velge in unknown roles. Friend plays Martin Krebs, a pharmaceutical rep whose alliance with the protagonists has shades of gray at best. Bailey is paleontologist Henry Loomis, while Garcia-Rulfo is Reuben Delgado, the father of the family lost at sea.
Blaise, Iacano, and Miranda play Reuben’s kids, while Sylvain is one of Johansson’s mission team. The roles of Skrein and Velge were not revealed in the teaser. The new trailer mostly reuses footage from the first trailer that was released in February. Much of the first few minutes is entirely new, while the last two minutes serve to highlight the major elements of the film and give you a taste of the film’s awe-inspiring scope. The trailer opens with a sequence in a laboratory where a worker in a hazmat suit is trapped with a Tyrannosaurus rex that is peering at him through the ceiling grate. He yells for help, but it’s too late for that. Prepare to be knocked off your feet and for your blood pressure to skyrocket.
Aside from a sampling of some of the iconic raptors, one of the first new dinosaur creatures viewers are treated to is the mosasaur, a massive sea creature. The trailer also teases a key heist scene involving a giant pterosaur egg. The egg is said to belong to Quetzalcoatlus northropi, one of the largest flying predators in Earth’s history. In the trailer, it’s referred to as “a flying carnivore the size of an F-16.” A key phrase also is said in the trailer, and it provides a clue as to how dark things might get on this island: The island was used to quarantine “the worst of the worst,” meaning that this place was full of dinosaurs that were simply too dangerous to be around the other dinosaurs that were cloned for Jurassic Park.
Jurassic World Rebirth may be setting itself up to be a reboot, but the trailer doesn’t shy away from the most famous elements from the franchise. The film is rebooting itself by returning to the original Jurassic Park research island that was abandoned to form Jurassic World on Isla Nublar. That move is likely a play on the nostalgia of the long-time fans of the series, as many have been clamoring for a return to that island since it was shown in all its detailed scientific glory in the original Jurassic Park. The “worst of the worst” move is likely meant to keep viewers on their toes in a way that the dinosaurs never have been before.
Jurassic World Rebirth arrives in theaters on July 2, 2025.
