Nine teenagers have been arrested in connection with the June 24 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina. According to authorities, the shooting came after a group of teens began to argue with Wright “over a girl,” an encounter the prosecutor’s office says was partially captured on video by one of the suspects.

Florence County sheriff’s deputies found Wright’s body on First Neck Road on June 24, where he had been shot several times. The rural road is about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. On June 25, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office arrested 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway, charging him with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Authorities say Raper shot Wright after a verbal altercation escalated, and he pulled out a gun to confront Wright. Several days later, local law enforcement announced the arrests of eight other teenagers, most of whom helped convince Wright to meet the group at the scene and knew Raper had already threatened to shoot him.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, said that the criminal proceedings are overwhelming her as she grieves the death of her son. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy. I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”

In addition to Wright’s girlfriend, Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach, authorities arrested Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso, both 18, Sydney Kearns, 17, Conner Carney, 17, Dylan Gibson, 17, Grant McBride, 17, and Jackson McMillan, 16. According to an arrest affidavit, Kistenmacher was charged with accessory before the fact and with taking Raper to the location, knowing he had a gun and knowing violence was likely to occur.

South Carolina allows authorities to prosecute teens as adults, and the Florence County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that five of the nine suspects are being tried as adults. “The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” said Major Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, speaking to WBTW-TV.

Three other teenagers from the Myrtle Beach area were charged with murder, in addition to Raper. They are Kendall, Belviso, and Kearns. Authorities say their involvement in the case was enough to charge them with murder in addition to the accessory before the fact charge the other six teens face.

Sheriff T.J. Joye said that the shooting was over the two parties’ “relationship issues” and that the victim and the shooter “both had issues with one female.” “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?” the sheriff continued.

Raper is being held without bond. Kendall is also being held without bond and faces a murder charge in addition to an accessory before the fact charge. Belviso and Kearns both secured a $20,000 surety bond last week.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office declined to release further details due to the ongoing investigation. A prosecutor for the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office declined to discuss the particulars of the case as well. But for Wright’s family, the details are becoming painfully clear.

His mother has continued to lament the senseless loss on social media while sharing her frustrations at the legal proceedings dragging on for weeks. To her, the tragedy is made all the more difficult by the fact that her son’s girlfriend and friends conspired to bring about his death.
