After months of speculation and developer previews together with limited beta testing, Google has started the official release of Android 16. The Android 16 update becomes available initially for Pixel devices while other Android phones will start receiving the update throughout the next weeks and probably months.

Pixel users can expect the over-the-air (OTA) update to appear today. Google makes system images and manual update files available on its developer site for people who don’t want to wait. Only people who can’t wait need to hurry. The update introduces no major changes that will appear immediately.

The low-profile launch of Android 16 hides several noteworthy new features while hinting at bigger upgrades later this year.

What’s New in Android 16

The notification shade displays the most prominent update in Android 16. Android 7.0 Nougat marked the first appearance of bundled notifications from Google. Android 16 mandates notification bundling as a standard feature. The Android 16 system combines multiple notifications from a single app into one expandable card to reduce screen clutter. The update is minor yet users will appreciate it.

Another addition is live update notifications. The latest feature launches with select rideshare and delivery applications and displays live updates using tiny status bar icons to users. Users receive live updates through small status bar icons which when tapped display a compact window that shows a live progress bar. Google confirms that it is collaborating with Samsung and OnePlus to embed this functionality into the Now Bar and Live Alerts respectively.

Security also gets a boost. The Advanced Protection feature becomes available system-wide across all devices operating under Android 16. When you activate this feature your phone loses 2G network access blocks websites without secure connections and prevents USB-based data sharing. This represents Google’s ongoing commitment to enhancing user privacy and ensuring device safety.

People who enjoy personalizing their messages will appreciate the new emoji feature driven by generative artificial intelligence. Users can design custom emojis via Emoji Kitchen using the Pixel Studio app. This feature serves as an entertaining feature that showcases Google’s expanding focus on generative AI experiences.

The latest version of Android 16 implements significant developments specifically designed to assist developers. One key improvement is automatic large-screen support. Developers creating apps for Android 16 (API level 36) will benefit from improved automatic scaling for foldables and tablets. Developers who build with large display devices in mind can expect their apps to look better on these screens with this change.

The system includes built-in camera improvements. The Android 16 platform incorporates advanced camera features including hybrid auto-exposure, motion photos, night mode detection among others. HDR screenshots have become available but will depend on app implementation. Google continues to restrict background process rules which will impact certain applications while promising to improve battery life.

Pixel Drop Features: VIPs and More

Google is launching Pixel Drop at the same time as Android 16. This update contains a few exclusive features specifically for Pixel users even though it doesn’t contain numerous new features. The standout feature in this update is Pixel VIPs. This feature builds upon the existing “favorite contacts” functionality. A special widget now displays recent messages from WhatsApp and Messages as well as shared location data and birthdays for VIP contacts. These contacts can override Do Not Disturb mode to make them more accessible.

The app now contains improved support for hearing aids along with real-time search functionality for the magnifier tool. The Expressive Captions feature which was once only available in the U.S. now extends to users in the UK, Canada, and Australia.

Only Pixel phones can run these features which depend on Android 16 for operation.

Delayed but Promising Features

A portion of Android 16 features will be released after today. Google intends to implement its most awaited updates at some point later in 2025.

Take Material 3 Expressive, for instance. The new design language which was previewed last month will become available sometime later in the current year. Google has not provided a definite release schedule yet but advises developers to start preparing their applications. The upcoming Android interface design will deliver enhanced color expression and display vibrancy.

Android now includes the much-anticipated desktop mode feature. Samsung collaborated to develop this feature which extends their existing DeX system. When connected to external displays tablets and eventually phones will be able to project windowed desktop-like interfaces through this mode. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold and similar foldable models cannot handle on-device windowing functionality but can enable this feature through external display connections.

OEM support is not guaranteed. Google’s Pixel line will feature complete windowing capabilities while other Android 16 devices might receive only fundamental screen mirroring functionality according to each manufacturer’s choices.

A Shift in Release Strategy

The largest shift in Android 16 lies in its release timing rather than its features. Previously Android updates were released during the fall season which coincided with new Pixel hardware launches. That’s no longer the case. Google has set their major Android updates to release in late spring while API-focused improvements will follow in the year’s final months.

The new schedule aims to establish a release cycle that offers greater flexibility. The debut of Android 16 marks the start of Google’s new calendar system even though its release appears less prominent than typical launches.

Android 16 will likely have a gradual impact since Google plans to release additional updates later in 2025 which include desktop mode capabilities and improved AI integration. The release of Android 16 deserves close monitoring.
