Justin Bieber once again has people talking and questioning his use of drugs following a recent post he shared on Instagram on Sunday. The 31-year-old Canadian pop singer reposted a graphic video to his story without any comment or caption, leaving fans and critics to question whether this was his stance on drug use or if he was using this video to send a bigger message.
The video posted was from a 2013 Iyanla: Fix My Life special and shows the now-deceased rapper DMX in a conversation with Iyanla Vanzant. In the graphic scene, Vanzant questions DMX on whether he truly wants to be a sober person. In response, he initially reacts harshly, “No weed, no drinking, nothing? Why would I?” When she retorts, “Because then you’re a clear, pure vessel for the voice of God,” DMX quickly responds, “I think I’m exactly where I need to be with God.”

Bieber had no caption or comment along with the video; he simply reposted the IG story from a Los Angeles-based cannabis dispensary called Gassy. The graphic video, of course, instantly got the reactions section of Instagram buzzing, and fans and the media began to draw their conclusions from the post.
One of which was that some fans concluded that the Canadian singer felt the same way about marijuana as DMX did, and others took it as Bieber’s attempt at stirring a conversation on freedom, drugs, and one’s relationship with God. Regardless, either interpretation of the post would not be out of place for Bieber, who has made no secret about his journey with religion over the years, even going as far as to open up about his relationship with God, and his attendance at Churchome, a church under the direction of Pastor Judah Smith.

The post has also been met with a context of Bieber’s more recent laid-back state, with the use of recreational marijuana. The pop singer has recently taken to social media and has been posting pictures of bongs and smoke that have left fans particularly unnerved. Although recreational marijuana is not illegal in the US and is fully legal in California, where Bieber lives with his wife Hailey Bieber and their baby son, Jack Blues Bieber, the repost has raised questions over Bieber’s current state of mind and lifestyle.
However, some of these rumors were quickly deflated earlier in the year by the pop star’s representative. In February, Justin Bieber’s rep released a statement to TMZ, saying, “The recurring narrative that Justin is using hard drugs is not true.” Continuing in the same statement to assure the public, the representative stated, “Justin is in one of the best places in his life… He is focused on being an amazing dad and husband and making music.”
The rep for Bieber had also given insight into some of the changes that the singer has undergone within the last year. In the same statement, the rep noted that Bieber had started to “clean house,” ending many old friendships and business partnerships that were no longer in the right alignment for Bieber or his current career. This new shift in Bieber’s life and work ethic is also noted in his recent work.
On July 11, Bieber dropped his seventh studio album, Swag, which the praise from many. This work by Bieber is a full dive into his personal growth, his love for his wife Hailey, and his experiences as a father to his new son, Jack. The album is an intriguing insight into Bieber’s life at the moment, and his rep noted that fans would be able to hear that from the songs on the record.
In another surprise move, the record also includes comedy “therapy sessions” from social media personality Druski. In addition to the album, the YouTuber provides hilarious commentary and questions for Bieber on Swag, and they discuss a range of topics, including Bieber’s personal growth and his life as a new father. In these “therapy sessions,” Bieber appears to bare his soul as he reflects on the past and his new life.
From these interludes, it’s not too far-fetched to assume Bieber is coming to terms with his new self, and he is putting the work out into the world for all to hear, with no stone left unturned or unturned. He’s not holding back or afraid of what fans may think, and that is a mature shift from Bieber.
While there has been no word on whether Bieber will tour the album, a recent report by Apple Music and Rolling Stone reported that Bieber was in talks with a potential Australian tour leg. A report to Rolling Stone by Frontier Touring has confirmed, however, that they “have no information” in terms of tour dates. Bieber had originally planned on a world tour to support the album Justice, but it was canceled midway through in 2022.
Fans are still optimistic, however, and after a full year off and a new album release with a clear focus on fatherhood and personal growth, it would be no surprise to fans to see Bieber return to the stage sooner rather than later — this time with more clarity and direction than ever before.
Whether the DMX post was meant to be a definitive statement from Bieber or simply another post that resonated with him, Justin Bieber has once again sparked conversation with one Instagram post without saying a word, and for Bieber, that’s possibly the whole point.
