Ohio State Launches Residential Experience Transformation
The Ohio State University has announced the start of its Residential Experience Transformation initiative, a comprehensive plan to advance student success and support the vision of President Ravi V. Bellamkonda for a signature undergraduate experience. This new effort underscores the university's commitment to creating a campus living environment that extends beyond housing, with a holistic focus on supporting learning, well-being, and community connection.
Holistic Approach to Campus Living
Rather than viewing campus housing simply as a residence, Ohio State's initiative incorporates various elements of student life, including housing, dining, recreation, academic engagement, and student support. By bringing these areas together, the university aims to give students a residential experience that serves as a competitive advantage, creating vibrant communities where students can engage, learn, and thrive.
Supporting Academic Success and Well-Being
President Bellamkonda emphasized the importance of the initiative in furthering Ohio State's mission of academic excellence. “This includes providing a transformative residential experience that serves each student in line with our academic excellence mission,” he said. The program seeks to intentionally shape student experiences to foster connections, build community, and help every student reach their full potential.
Research demonstrates that living on campus provides significant benefits in student retention, persistence, and overall success. The initiative, which builds on existing residence hall renovations and renewal efforts, takes a broader view to help students flourish throughout their Ohio State journey.
Not Just Facilities: A Multifaceted Strategy
Senior Vice President for Student Life Melissa Shivers stressed that the focus is on student success rather than simply upgrading facilities. “Our goal is to create a residential experience that serves as a competitive advantage for Ohio State by intentionally integrating housing, dining, recreation, academic engagement and student support,” Shivers said. The university is looking beyond the physical aspects of campus living to develop communities that foster meaningful relationships, support growth, and drive both academic and personal success during and after students’ time at Ohio State.
Collaboration and Long-Term Planning
The initiative is led collaboratively by Shivers, Trevor Brown (interim executive vice president and provost), and Mike Papadakis (senior vice president and chief financial officer). Their leadership aims to align student experience goals with the university's enrollment strategy, academic mission, and long-term planning.
A central focus will be on strengthening ties between living and learning environments, including enhancing academic engagement, leadership development, and a stronger sense of community connection. Particular attention will be paid to elevating experiences within Honors and Scholars programs, as well as contributing to a distinctive undergraduate experience.
Community Involvement in Shaping the Future
To help shape the future of the residential experience, Ohio State plans to launch a comprehensive engagement process in the fall. Students, faculty, staff, families, alumni, and community partners will be invited to participate in visioning sessions aimed at identifying which experiences and services matter most to student success. “The best ideas come from listening,” said Brown, highlighting that the insights from those who have firsthand experience with campus living will be essential in defining the next generation of the Buckeye experience.
Alignment with Institutional Goals
The Residential Experience Transformation initiative is aligned with Ohio State’s Education for Citizenship 2035 and the university’s broader goals to strengthen student success, build community, and pursue academic excellence. Through intentional planning and collaboration, Ohio State aims to create a residential experience that will benefit students for years to come.
