Strange New Worlds S3: Kirk in the Captain’s Chair

Paramount+ has finally released the official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. As per the trailer and official announcement, the season will premiere on July 17, 2025, on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 ended on a cliffhanger with the U.S.S. Enterprise crew witnessing a Gorn attack on a Federation colony world. In the episode finale, many Federation forces and some crew members were taken as prisoners by the Gorn. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) was later left with a major decision – to either retreat as per Starfleet orders or attempt a rescue mission. Staying true to his style, Pike chooses the latter, thus leaving the story for the season 3 premiere.

A brief look at what the season will bring was shared at New York City Comic-Con in October last year. The preview, which picks up from where the season 2 finale left off, has the crew engaged in a ferocious and desperate space battle against the Gorn threat. In the new trailer, the battle is further extended, with the Enterprise and her crew setting out to end it. In addition, Strange New Worlds season 3 will also address other storylines, revealing how the crew overcomes this formidable enemy while also dealing with more new threats.

Although it’s safe to say that the crew, under Pike’s leadership, is going to be out of danger once the Gorn arc is finally concluded, season 3 is promising some new baddies. The returning and new enemies are expected to put the crew to the test to see how much they are willing to fight for one another, for their beliefs, and for the values that the Federation stands for. In addition to adventure and action episodes that viewers have come to expect from Star Trek shows, season 3 will be more diverse. The series will feature episodes that tell stories of faith, duty, romance, comedy, and more.

As per a Paramount+ announcement, the upcoming season will also introduce more genre experimentation, shifting from the show’s initial storytelling setup. “This season is like that,” the official description of the trailer reads. “Hard and strong, driven by their duty to the Federation and the people they love. But it’s also kind, tender, and full of heart. And now, we’re about to show you just how messy it can get. Brace yourselves, Starfleet. It’s about to get weird.”

Returning main and recurring cast members will be back for the third season. The new main character to join the cast is Cillian O’Sullivan, who is set to play the role of Dr. Roger Korby, a former Star Trek: The Original Series character first portrayed by Michael Strong in one episode. In the Strange New Worlds timeline, Korby is a renowned archaeologist and expert on medical archaeology. He is also Christine Chapel’s (Jess Bush) missing fiancé. Korby’s return is bound to stir things up between the archaeologist and Nurse Chapel. The awkward situation is further amplified by the fact that Chapel now has a relationship with Spock (Ethan Peck).

Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt will also be among the guest stars for the third season. The former is known for his character, Gary the Garbage Person, in Star Trek: Lower Decks, and the latter is an acclaimed stand-up comedian and voice actor who has appeared on shows such as The Jim Gaffigan Show and The King of Queens.

In the official season 3 teaser trailer shared back in April, it was established that the series will feature more genre diversity. It not only promised more of Star Trek’s trademark space operas, space wars, and adventures but also lighter and more humorous side stories. The new trailer gave viewers more confirmation that the third season will include more episodes, such as romantic subplots, bonding among the Enterprise crew, and science gone wrong.

In the above trailer, James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) is seen in the Enterprise’s captain’s chair and being addressed by Pike as captain. It is not clear what role Kirk is playing in the upcoming season, though it is expected that his character will be the same from the TOS Star Trek continuity. In the scene, he is still in training as a cadet and being prepared for what the job entails. Pike, in an attempt to test Kirk’s captaincy, makes him take command of the Enterprise, even if it’s just for a while. “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with,” Pike tells Kirk.

The trailer ends on a high note with Spock and Oswalt’s Vulcan character sharing one of the rare comedic lines in the Star Trek franchise. In a quick action, Spock starts demonstrating a “high five” to the Vulcan. When the latter asks him to go “down low,” Spock punches down but fast enough to fake the typical “too slow” move. When asked why he did that, the Vulcan (looking confused) responds with, “Why would you do that?” Spock’s deadpan reply: “Because you are too slow.”

Release date and schedule

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 will premiere on July 17, 2025, on Paramount+. New episodes will be released weekly every Thursday until September 11, 2025.

The series has already been renewed for a fourth season.
